Bring sunblock (seriously) if you go to the beach today. The sand bars are more developed at Newcomb Hollow beach about 2 miles north of Maguire's Landing. More surfers are there but there is a lot of room for everyone.

Sunrise and a beautiful day ahead
Yesterday's fog did burn off and surfers were getting nice rides on sometimes head-high waves. Today will be the same with low tide an hour later (noon thirty). I'm sore from 3 hrs paddling but may make it to the beach again after my chores.

Cool and Pleasant
Sand slowly engulfs a fence at Maguire's landing parking lot. A slight breeze and overcast sky keep this morning cool and pleasant. No surf today. Thinking of Costa Rica again and planning for a larger trip than last time. Check out Witch's Rock Surf Camp for their latest photos.

Dark water sunrise
Sunrise and a strong north east wind at Maguire's. Birds are flying north along the dune face and sand is piling up in the parking lot. The longer the wind blows from the east, the larger the swell will get. Rain forecast for the next few days.
Missing days in blog due to Boston anime convention.

Bright Sunny
Bright sunny day on the way. Water is still cold and the waves are small. A still cloudless day will be perfect for the beach this time of year.
Costa Rica is still on my mind.

Beautiful sunrise with some small waves and an offshore breeze. A cargo ship in the distance brings goods to Boston from unknown ports. A grandfather pushes a stroller among the sand piles in the parking lot. A man enjoys his paper and coffee in a truck overlooking the beach. A nice start to what promises to be another great Cape Cod day.

Sunrise, calm and an empty bench on a cool morning at Maguire's make me wish for the weekend and time to sit and appreciate the scene fully. But the ship on the horizon reminds me that work is waiting and that I should get back on the road to Hyannis. It feels like summer has arrived and is quickly removing any excuses not to begin surfing. Perhaps this weekend....

Some nice small waves
Some nice small waves from yesterday being cleaned up by a faint offshore breeze. These would be good for surfing but the parking lot will be full due to the filming of The Lightkeepers. It was cold overnight and the water should still be in the lower 50s. So gear up and get out there.

Today the wind is coming strong from the north and east. The waves are building as the warmer surface water gets piled up along the shore. Birds take advantage of the updrafts along the dunes and bluffs to fly up and down the coastline in search of food. The strong winds blow sand off the beach and deposit it in the lee of the dunes and the parking lot. There is a filming company working here today. I hear it's a film involving Richard Dreyfuss.

Foggy morning at Maguire's

Cape Cod sky
This morning the fog rolled in thick but burned off to reveal crystal clear skies. A perfect day in the 60s is excellent for outdoor activities such as driving, bicycling, gardening and hanging out at the beach.

Rainy friday
It's drizzling with a 10 mph wind from the southwest. Birds are hunkered down in the lee of the dunes. The waves are up to 4ft and there is hope of clean surf with continued offshore winds. Fences are repaired and the parking lot is cleared for the upcoming memorial day weekend. So get your gear together and take advantage of the empty beaches before summer arrives.

Sand dunes in the morning
The spring rains and warmer weather have brought the dunes back to life. The plants catch wind blown sand and help the dunes to grow. Erosion increases in areas where plants have been removed. Sand fences redirect foot traffic and reduce surface winds which allow sand grains to settle onto the dunes.

Beach patrol commute along the dunes at Maguire's Landing heading south towards Marconi station. Small signs mark the nesting areas of piping plovers.

Sunrise over Maguire's
Early bird photo at Maguire's Landing. The slight offshore breeze settled the water and kept most birds on the beach. One person reading paper in parking lot.
Is it just the tide or is the beach getting bigger?

Monday morning Maguire's
About 5:45 am heading down the path to Maguire's Landing. A cool sea breeze chopping up the water and providing lift for the gulls making their way north and south along the dunes. In stronger winds the paragliders can soar for hours along the outer beaches.

Saturday evening at Maguire's landing
The only (or last) surfer leaving the beach today says the water is warming up. He was wearing his 3mm summer suit. The clean waves and spray indicate an offshore breeze. A pair of gulls are searching for a few fish to tide them over until morning.
Click for reviews of some surfing spots.
Saturday morning
Some 4 footers at Maguire's landing. A lone surfer arrived for a morning session. I won't go in yet since the water will give me instant brain freeze. So ill wait until late May.

Return of summer berm?
A rainy morning with a 10 mph seabreeze made this shot a little uncomfortable. My visit was short but I got a shot of what appears to be the summer berm. This mass of sand moves onto the beach for the summer and retreats back out to sea during winter storms. It's very clean and ready for sand castles. The waves are growing with the onshore breeze so tomorrow may be a good day for surfing. That is for those of us with winter wetsuits.

Red in the morning...
Gray weather moving in from the south gradually hides a spectacular sunrise. I took about a hundred photos this morning and half were blurry. They are interesting to me but not necessarily to you. So this is a fairly clear shot of the sky as I arrived at the beach. By the time I left, the sky was completely gray. Tide will be low around noon and I expect to see some surfers in the water then.

Cool and Foggy
It's cool and foggy this morning at Maguire's landing. A great day for a morning jog or walk along the beach.
Thinking of a destination for our winter trip this year. Lot's of things to consider such as cost, travel time, surfing conditions, size of group, safety, etc....
Club members need to get deposits in by next friday. Fund raising efforts continue with pizza sales on fridays.
