Golden sunrise

This morning was a little chilly and had just enough breeze to rough up the water.
Waves were less than 1 foot high and lit up brown and green in the sunrise.
No animals on the way to the beach this morning.

Early morning and the beach

It was cool and windy at the beach.  The approaching bad weather to the south made for a dramatic sunrise.  I was somewhat surprised to see a small flock of turkeys in a yard along the way to the beach.  The tom ruffled up his feathers and the hens came running.

Thinking about getting in the water soon.  I hope to get a new or used board for this season at one of the local surf shops.  Then in June, we can make a trip to second beach in Rhode Island.

Sunrise and low tide

Low tide again.  Small waves of spring and summer tend to bring sand onto the beach.  This ridge of sand should be growing larger and moving towards the dunes.  The growing sand bar could make for some interesting breaks in the summer time.
It's early morning and I was happy to see a pair of turkeys at the entrance to Maguire's landing.  Then on the way back, a coyote ran across the parking lot in front of my car.  I wonder how these animals will be affected by local rabies baiting projects.

Morning at Maguire's

Sunrise at Maguire's around 6:15.  Light breeze and a sunny warm day ahead.  On the way to the beach, a fox was in a driveway by the general store.  A mother and daughter were walking their dog to the beach.  A trend?

These houses above Maguire's Landing are often lit up by the bright sunrises.
The weather is warming up so get your gear together and get ready to surf.  Take advantage of surfing tutorials online, do some stretching and other exercises and make your way to the beach.

Sunday morning

It's low tide at Maguire's Landing.  Sunday morning's beer cans hint at previous festivities.  A mother and daughter walk their dog in the cool sand.  Beachcombers, barely visible in the distance, stroll along the dunes.

Early morning at Maguire's Landing

This morning's view of Maguire's Landing at medium low tide.  A few prospective breaks to the north and south promise good surfing this summer.  Today I'm off with the family  to walk parts of the Freedom trail which winds around to important historic sites of colonial Boston.  The weather forecast is good.

Spring break winding down

This is a shot looking south along the beach at Maguire's landing.  These pools may grow and merge to form channels between sand bars. This would allow the waves to break gradually rather than close out.  Keep your fingers crossed.
The water is still cold and a friend recommended a 5/4/3 wetsuit made by hyperflex for winter surfing.
The weather is nice today and I'm off to fix a fence damaged by a snow plow.

The wind switched to the west (offshore) and really cleaned up the surf.  This shot was taken at high tide which is not the best for surfing.  But there were people playing and strolling along the beach and enjoying the day.
A kite boarder took great advantage of the winds on the harbor side.  Some of the small boats moored in the shallow water along the clam grants got swamped in the choppy waves .

It's warming up at Maguire's landing

It's starting to look like summer (sort of).
Today's nice weather and promise of large waves brought surfers and beach goers to Maguire's landing.  The die hard surfers rode the waves on the incoming tide and were out by noon.
The beach strollers were playing in the sand and enjoying the sun, light breezes and the crashing of the waves.  Some brave souls were even getting an early start on their tans.  Perhaps this is a real end to the winter weather and a taste of warmer things to come.

What a difference a day makes!

This is a view of the same stretch of beach in the previous post.
Lots of erosion and debris on the beach.
shipwreck has been exposed on Newcomb's Hollow beach 100 yards south of the parking lot.  The dunes are both eroding into the sea and being blown back into higher piles landward.  Houses along the dunes are being buried and undermined at the same time.
We live in a changing environment which follows its own plans according to the rules of physics at a pace determined by the energy available.

Maguire's Landing

A small day with an ocean breeze at Maguire's landing. 4/20/09
It's vacation and summer is getting closer.  More people have begun surfing but it's still too cold for me.

Corey Dooling

It's hard to write about Corey.  He left us with happy memories though it makes me sad to think of him.  Andrew Navickas called me on the sunday after Corey's wake to say he was in the area and would be surfing at Nauset beach.  A lot of Corey's friends were there both on the beach and in the very cold water.  Click to see some photos of the day.
